10 Mistakes That Ruin Product Descriptions

ContentLinqCheck Editorial Team· 7 min read

A strong product description helps a shopper understand the product in seconds and lets AI systems evaluate the page correctly. These ten mistakes are the structural problems we run into most often.

Published:

1. Not saying what the product is in the first paragraph

If the first three lines do not say what the product is, who it is for and why it is different, shoppers leave. AI systems also weight that opening summary heavily when they decide what the page is about.

2. Reusing the same copy across products

Pasting "premium quality, durable, elegant design" onto every SKU makes pages indistinguishable from each other and strips out the details that would make one product the right answer.

3. Burying specs inside prose

Attributes scattered through long paragraphs are hard to scan for people and hard to extract for machines. Technical values belong in a key-value structure.

4. Inventing attributes you cannot verify

Filling in material, warranty period or country of manufacture without a source document raises return rates and erodes trust the moment a customer checks.

5. Contradicting your own spec table

Saying "200 ml" in the description while the attribute table says "100 ml" is common and expensive. Conflicts like this make AI systems treat the whole page as unreliable.

6. Leaving category-required fields empty

Fragrance family for perfume, outsole type for footwear, battery life for electronics: these category-specific fields are the basis of every comparison a shopper or an agent makes.

7. Writing about yourself instead of the product

"With 20 years of experience, our company…" belongs on the about page. A product description describes the product.

8. Over-stuffing keywords

Forcing the same keyword into every sentence breaks the natural flow and does nothing in modern retrieval systems.

9. Leaving image alt text empty

Alt text is not only an accessibility requirement; it is also how AI systems associate visual content with the rest of the page.

10. Letting the page go stale

Discontinued variants, revised box contents or changed manufacturer details confuse both customers and machines when the page is never updated.

In short

A good description makes the product clear in the first paragraph, presents technical values in a structured way, and never invents what it does not know. The LinqCheck Content Studio is built around that rule: it generates copy only from verified product data.
